February 1, 2005, Fr. Steve Koehler, pastor of St. Vincent Ferrer, Madison Heights, administrator of St. James, Ferndale, and vicar of Southeast Oakland (Ferndale, Madison Heights, Oak Park and Royal Oak) was installed as the new pastor of St. Rene Goupil - while still retaining his other positions.
In a short time, Fr. Koehler dismissed the staff members, or induced them to resign, and cut back or eliminated many of the programs for which St. Rene Goupil was known. Approximately 50% of the parishioners left the parish and revenue significantly decreased. Many parishioners fought back.
